LeBron James 48 points vs Atlanta Hawks on his birthday December 30 2009

CLEVELAND — LeBron James had a big bash to celebrate his 25th birthday. Anderson Varejao delivered his gift before the party started. Varejao made his first career 3-pointer with 17.2 seconds left — as the 24-second shot clock was about to expire — to give Cleveland a disputed 106-101 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night, the Cavaliers’ 11th victory in 12 games. James scored a season-high 48 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Cavs. “That’s a great gift,” James said. “I had Andy in the gift exchange and so he paid me back. That’s what friends are for.” With the score tied at 101 and the shot clock down to its final tick, Mo Williams passed the ball to Varejao on the left wing. The 6-foot-11 forward, who missed his first 18 career 3-pointers, stepped up and drilled his long shot just before the horn sounded. When he ran to the other end of the floor, James rushed into his arms. “I saw that Mo got kind of tied up and I just tried to get open,” Varejao said. “I just shot it.” A birthday swish for James. “That’s what I told him,” Varejao said. “Happy birthday.” The shot was initially ruled a 2-pointer, but after reviewing the bucket on video, the officiating crew determined that Varejao’s feet were behind the line. After Atlanta’s Mike Bibby missed a 3 with six seconds left, Jamario Moon made two free throws to ice the Cavs’ sixth straight win and 11th in a row at home. Joe Johnson scored 35 for the Hawks, who were held to just 37 points in the second half

LeBron James 29 points in 29 minutes vs Rockets December 27 2009

LeBron James 29 points in 29 minutes vs Rockets December 27 2009 CLEVELAND — Once LeBron James and the Cavaliers adjusted to being back home, the Houston Rockets quickly wore out their welcome. Cleveland looked sluggish through the first few minutes following a West Coast trip, but quickly recovered with a flurry of 3-pointers and stifling defense to beat the Rockets 108-83 Sunday night. James scored 29 points and Mo Williams added 20 for Cleveland (24-8), which has won four straight and nine of 10. They have won 10 straight at home, the league’s longest active winning streak. “It’s tough when you’re coming off the West Coast,” Williams said. “I don’t know why, and I’ve been in the league seven years. When you’re coming off the West Coast, the energy is not there. The third quarter we came out with a lot of energy and got it rolling.” James and Williams combined to make five 3-pointers in less than three minutes early in the third quarter, stretching Cleveland’s lead to 68-53. The margin didn’t dip below 15 the rest of the way. Cleveland’s defense took it from there, holding the Rockets to a season low in points after Houston raced out to an early 16-4 lead in the first quarter. Aaron Brooks had 23 points for Houston, but only five in the second half. Trevor Ariza scored 11 points, but went 2 of 10 from the floor and is now mired in a 10-for-48 slump. Ariza injured his shin late in the game and a team spokesman said he was taken for precautionary X-rays. Carl Landry

LeBron James 36 points vs Dwyane Wade February 4 2010

CLEVELAND — LeBron James was willing to do anything necessary to beat close friend Dwyane Wade. Even if it meant filling in at point guard. Forced to start in the backcourt, James scored 36 points — 17 on free throws — and Daniel Gibson added 12 in the second half after rushing back from the hospital as the Cleveland Cavaliers ran their winning streak to 10 with a 102-86 win over Wade and the Miami Heat on Thursday night. James ran Cleveland’s offense in place of Gibson, who had been starting while Mo Williams and Delonte West recover from injuries. In attack mode from the start, James added eight assists, and seven rebounds. The anticipated one-on-one showdown between him and Wade never materialized as the Cavs controlled the game and attempted 36 free throws to 14 for Miami. “This team is just better than us,” said Wade, flattened twice by run-ins with Shaquille O’Neal. “You have to be realistic. I understand this team has NBA championship aspirations. We don’t have that. We’re focusing on trying to get to the playoffs and this team is trying to get to the championship. It’s totally different.” Wade finished with 24 points on 11-of-26 shooting and Michael Beasley had 21 as the Heat dropped their four straight and sixth in seven games. The last time James and Wade hooked up on Jan. 12, they scored a combined 70 points in an anything-you-can-do-I-can-do-better matchup. Both provided their usual jaw-dropping plays again, but James was able to improve to 13-9 against

LeBron James 35 points vs Denver Nuggets sweet sick jumpers Jan 8 2010

January 8 2010 Cleveland Cavaliers @ Denver Nuggets DENVER — Even without Carmelo Anthony on the court, the Pepsi Center is still LeBron James’ personal house of horrors. Anthony had the best seat in the arena for the big visit from James, missing the game but enjoying the result as the injury-riddled Denver Nuggets beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 99-97 Friday. Anthony’s much-hyped matchup with James will have to wait until Feb. 18 because of a nagging knee injury that kept him out of his fourth straight game. The Nuggets didn’t need ‘Melo to send James to his sixth loss in seven trips to the Pepsi Center. Kenyon Martin filled in nicely for Anthony, scoring 19 points, grabbing 12 boards and playing tough defense on James down the stretch, forcing him to miss a layup and then inducing him to step out of bounds on back-to-back possessions in the final minute. “Those were big stops,” teammate Anthony Carter said. “K-Mart won the challenge.” If only begrudging respect from King James. “I think Kenyon is really good laterally, he’s a physical guy,” James said. “As far as problems, I don’t think he presents any problems. But he definitely did a good job of standing in front of me the last couple of possessions.” Nuggets coach George Karl said he made the right call by not putting Martin on James too early. He stuck with Aaron Afflalo and Joey Graham until the final minute. “I was just trying to make it tough on him,” Martin said. “He’s a great player and of course, the ball was

LeBron James 43 points triple double vs Carmelo Anthony 40 points February 18, 2010

LeBron James 43 points triple double vs Carmelo Anthony 40 points February 18, 2010 CLEVELAND — George Karl called being on the court his sanctuary. Carmelo Anthony answered his coach’s prayer. Anthony scored 40 points, including the winning basket, and Denver overcame LeBron James’ monstrous night to end the Cavaliers’ 13-game winning streak with a 118-116 victory in overtime Thursday night in Karl’s first game since revealing he has neck and throat cancer. “I think he’s happy,” Anthony said of his coach. “This boosted his spirit up a lot. In the back of our mind, we know his situation. We’re playing for him.” James had his triple-double by the end of regulation, and became the first NBA player with at least 43 points, 13 rebounds, 15 assists, two steals and four blocks, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. James’ triple-double came in front of Oscar Robertson, who averaged a triple-double during the 1961-62 season. He was honored before the game along with Jerry West, James and Anthony as co-captains of US Olympic gold medal basketball teams. Robertson and West captained the Americans’ gold medal in 1960, while James and Anthony were the co-captains in 2008. James is also the first player to have at least 40 points, 15 assists and 13 rebounds in a game since Robertson had 42 points, 18 assists and 15 rebounds on Feb. 13, 1962. “In that sense, it’s huge because of what he was able to do,” James said. “But in the sense of us losing the ball game, it means nothing

LeBron James 29 points nasty skills vs Phoenix Suns December 21 2009

PHOENIX — Nobody has been able to beat the Suns in Phoenix, except the Cavaliers. LeBron James and his Cleveland teammates made it two in a row in the desert with a 109-91 triumph on Monday night. The Suns had won 19 straight at home since Cleveland beat them there on March 12 last season. At 10-0, they were the only team in the NBA without a home loss this season. Cleveland ended that run with a dominant fourth quarter. James and Mo Williams did the offensive damage and the Cavaliers’ defense stifled the Suns in a late 15-0 run. James scored 29 and Williams 24 as the Cavs shot 53 percent one night after a tough loss at Dallas. “Just a veteran ballclub,” James explained. “We know how important back-to-back games are and bounce-back games. We don’t let one loss linger around our team. We never have.” Steve Nash had 18 points and 10 assists for Phoenix. “They have a great, great player on their team,” Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. “They play off him and really do a good job of it. They have guys that can space the floor and make shots. Contrary to what anybody may think, to get to the Eastern Conference championships, you are going to have to go through Cleveland at some point.” Shaquille O’Neal didn’t get much of a reaction from the fans in his first game in Phoenix since the Suns traded him to Cleveland, just a smattering of cheers and boos when he was introduced. In foul trouble much of the night, O’Neal had three points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. Afterward, he
