Ron Artest Signs With Lakers [Full Interview] 2009

Kobe Bryant teams up with his rival competitor. Good or Bad? In a free-agent swap of forwards, the Lakers reached an agreement with Houston Rockets forward Ron Artest and the Rockets have reached agreement with Trevor Ariza, The Times has learned. Artest met with Lakers executives throughout the day and agreed to terms of about $18 million over three years. Ariza agreed to a five-year deal with the Rockets for about $33 million, roughly the same that the Lakers had offered in their effort to retain him. “I had to do what was best for me and family,” Ariza said. “I am happy with my decision. I’m glad this all worked out. The Rockets are going to give me a chance to improve my game and that’s all you can ask for.” Ariza’s agent, David Lee, said the 24-year-old forward passed up a more lucrative contract offer from another team with salary-cap space. “We decided to go with Houston anyway,” Lee said. “It was never about the money. It was about going someplace where you felt appreciated.” Artest, who will be 30 in November, enjoys the Los Angeles lifestyle and was a presence in the courtside seats for some of the Lakers’ games in the NBA Finals. He is still a formidable defender and averaged 17.1 points last season, though he will take a pay cut from the $7.4 million he made last season because the Lakers don’t have as much money at their disposal when it comes to other teams’ free agents. “I am very excited to finally be going to LA,” Artest said in a statement. “For years

Allen Iverson 1997 Rookie Game MVP Highlight & Interview

MVP Allen Iverson Scored 19 points and dished 9 assists to carry the East win over the West. Many great players played in this game. LA Lakers:Kobe Bryant & Derek Fisher, Bucks:Ray Allen, Boston Celtics:Antoine Walker, Toronto Raptors:Marcus Camby, New Jersey Nets:Kerry Kittles, Abdur-Rahim, Indiana Pacers:Dampier. Toronto’s Marcus Camby and Philadelphia’s Allen Iverson put on a first-half fireworks show, then held off a furious rally from Kobe Bryant and the West to post a 96-91 win in the Schick Rookie Game. Camby scored 14 of his 18 points in the first 15-minute half, as the East jumped to a 51-36 lead on the strength of 67.6 percent shooting. Camby, 7-9 in the first half, lived off dazzling passes from Iverson, who had eight of his nine assists in the opening half en route to the game’s Most Valuable Player award. Iverson and Camby, the first two players selected in the 1996 Draft, reversed roles early in the second half, when Camby threw an alley-oop pass that Iverson caught at full extention of his 6-0 frame, and threw down with one hand. That keyed a 6-0 run that put the East squad up by 20, and seemingly out of reach for the West, which shot only 36.8 percent in the first half. Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers’ teen phenom, and teammate Derek Fisher, had other ideas. Trailing 76-57, the unheralded Fisher scored all 10 of his team’s points in a 10-2 run that put the West within 11 points, and set the stage for Bryant, his highly touted teammate, who at only 18 years
