Angry Kobe doesn’t make for happy times for Lakers

Kobe is mad at everyone, although we can't say for sure if this includes himself.

He's not very good about elaborating.

He went like five or six days without talking to the media. The only exception was his "nope" to The Times' Mike Bresnahan when asked whether he'd like to discuss his ejection against Milwaukee.

When he did speak, it was after the game with Miami. He made it clear he was very upset. He just didn't say where his anger was directed.

Was he upset at Phil Jackson?

"I have no idea," the coach said before Tuesday night's game with the San Antonio Spurs.

Any idea what he's grousing about?

"I think he's grousing about the fact we didn't compete very well."

Does that include Kobe? Do you think he competed?

"He tried," Jackson said. "Some of it is frustration coming out at the end of a game."

It's difficult to say when Kobe is really mad because he always looks mad. This time he went so far as to practice with his teammates. So he had to be really ticked.

But after another maddening Lakers loss Tuesday night, I sensed progress. He had tried to feed off his anger, but had flopped.

"Have you ever thought about playing with a little bit more fun in your game?" I said.

"Yup," Kobe said. "Sure."

"So why haven't you gone that route?" I said.

"It's an effort," he said. "I'll try."

He was so mad early against the Spurs, he ignored his teammates. He scored a quick eight points, every time the ball hitting his hands only a matter of a second or two before he shot.

Later he would go on to miss 13 consecutive shots.

"In hindsight," I said, "when you came out and took control of the game, was that the right move?"

Lakers come unglued again in 97-82 loss to San Antonio

Kobe Bryant sat on the bench, his jaw clenched and eyes narrowed as the final meaningless minutes dripped off the clock.

It's never the look Lakers fans want to see.

The season lurched again for the Lakers, who suddenly can't win at home against bad teams, can't win at home against good ones and apparently can't win on the road against good teams either, a 97-82 drubbing Tuesday by the San Antonio Spurs offering the latest confirmation.

The Lakers broke through the strangely elusive 80-point barrier, but just barely, their offense a shell of its pristine production from when they started out 8-0 seemingly eons ago.

Their scoring the last three games, all losses, looks pitifully small: 79-80-82.

Bryant was determined to carry the load but instead shot the Lakers out of the game, scoring 21 points on eight-for-27 shooting, including a span in which he missed an unsightly 13 consecutive shots at AT&T Center.

He was angry at his teammates after a pair of listless efforts last week at Staples Center. This time, he shouldered the blame.

"I couldn't put the ball in the basket and it snowballed from there," Bryant said. "It's my responsibility to make 'em. I had some really good looks, man. I've got to put those down, period."

Bryant had five turnovers and only one assist as the Lakers lost three consecutive games for the third time since acquiring Pau Gasol in 2008. They ended a four-game losing streak earlier this month and could be looking at another one if they don't recover in time Wednesday at New Orleans.

Even the normally loquacious Lamar Odom was strapped for words.

"What do you want me to say?" he said with a dose of melancholy. "What do you want me to talk about? I don't mean to be disrespectful. I'd rather think before I talk. I don't want to talk off emotion."

What are your emotions?

"I'm a little confused," he said.

By what?

"What do you think?"

The way the Lakers are losing?

"Yeah," Odom responded. "I don't even know what to tell you."

Odom had nine points on three-of-nine shooting and Gasol had a single-single (nine points, nine rebounds) while making three of eight shots.

Bryant tried to force the action from the start, committing three turnovers and taking eight shots in barely seven minutes. The Spurs ended the first quarter with a 16-2 run and a 27-18 lead. They never trailed again.

Pau Gasol says Lakers aren’t exploiting size advantage and are ‘not being smart’

They have all this size with two 7-footers and a 6-10 forward with the wing span of a 7-footer.

And yet, the Lakers inexplicably have refused at times to exploit the advantages they have in Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom.

The 7-foot Gasol is perhaps the most skilled of the Lakers' big men, but he was, for the most part, a forgotten man Tuesday night in their 97-82 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

"I don't think we played the smartest game, put it that way," Gasol said. "I don't think we attacked smart out there. We've got to recognize what's going on and understand where our strengths are against certain opponents and try to exploit them."

Gasol finished with nine points on three-for-eight shooting. He didn't score in the second half, taking just two shots.

Gasol, who had nine rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots, is not pleased that the Lakers have lost three consecutive games.

"Whatever it is that needs to be fixed, you've got to do it all together," Gasol said. "It can't be an individual effort from nobody. It's got to be all together, on a string, like a family."

One member of that Lakers family voiced displeasure with the effort of his teammates after a 96-80 loss to the Miami Heat on Christmas. And he vowed things would be different.

That family member was Kobe Bryant, and things were different Tuesday. Bryant took three times as many shots as Gasol, 27, and missing 19 of them.

"I think any time you have Kobe taking that number of shots he had and pressing a little bit, Pau kind of got out of the offense because of that," Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said. "[. . .But Gasol] didn't have a good game."

Maybe, it was suggested to Gasol, he should demand the ball more.

Maybe, it was suggested to Gasol, all the big men should demand the ball more.

"We can," Gasol said. "I think we should a little more. We have to take advantage of our size. That's one of the main strengths of this team and we go away from it and we don't utilize it. And we're, like I said again, not being smart."

Lakers Gameday | 12/28/10 | Spurs

GAME NOTES

SEASON& SERIES NOTES; CONNECTIONS
The Lakers split last season's series with San Antonio 2-2 after taking the 2008-09 series from the Spurs 2-1. In their last 10 overall games, the Lakers are 6-4 against the Spurs. At home, the Lakers are 4-1 in their last five meetings with San Antonio but just 5-5 in their last 10 games against the Spurs in Los Angeles. Overall, the Lakers are 10-11 all-time against the Spurs at STAPLES Center. In San Antonio, the Lakers are 4-6 in their last 10 meetings with the Spurs. Under head coach Phil Jackson, the Lakers are 18-20 against San Antonio in the regular season. In the postseason, Jackson is 15-7 against the Spurs, advancing to the next round in four of five series meetings. Jackson (11) and Popovich (4) are the only two active coaches to have won multiple NBA Championships. In 48 career games including 43 starts against San Antonio, Bryant is averaging 24.5 points per game. On February 8, 2010, Pau Gasol helped defeat the Spurs with 21 points, 19 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 blocks, marking just the seventh time a player has accomplished that feat in league history. Spurs guard Manu Ginobili played for Argentina in the 2008 Beijing Olympics but suffered a foot injury in their August 22 meeting with Kobe Bryant's United States team that forced him to miss the first 12 games of the 2008- 09 regular season with San Antonio. Bryant scored 12 points as the U.S. defeated defending champion Argentina 101-81 to advance to the gold medal game while Ginobili played just six minutes due to injury. Additionally, Luke Walton and Spurs forward Richard Jefferson were roommates at the University of Arizona while playing three years together for the Wildcats. Spurs guard/forward Ime Udoka broke into the NBA with the Lakers during the 2003-04 season, posting eight points, five rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes over four total games.

RARE HOME STRUGGLES
On Christmas Day, the Lakers lost by 16 points to the Heat. In their previous game on December 21st, they lost by 19 points to the Bucks. With both losses coming at home, it is only the third time in franchise history that the Lakers have lost back-to-back home games by at least 16 points. The team was in Minneapolis the previous two times this happened, once in January 1959 and once in November/December 1959. In both cases, the Lakers played at least one road game in between the losses.*

ROAD STREAK
Prior to their recent two-game skid, the Lakers completed a 7-game mid-December road-trip with a 6-1 mark, winning the last five straight. If able to win back-to-back road games at San Antonio and New Orleans, the Lakers would extend their road win-streak to seven consecutive, equaling the 5th longest road win streak in franchise history.

BACK-TO-BACK
Tuesday's game at San Antonio is the first of a back-to-back set with the Spurs and Hornets. This season, the Lakers are 4-1 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game of back-to-backs. On the year, the Lakers will play 15 sets of back-to-back games as opposed to the 20 they faced a season ago. The only other time the Lakers have played 15 or fewer sets of back-to-backs came in the team's first ever NBA season (1948-49) when they also played 15 sets of back-to-backs. Chicago, Milwaukee and Atlanta lead the league with 23 back-to-backs each in 2010-11 while Oklahoma City (17), Phoenix (16) and the Lakers (15) will play the fewest sets this season.

KOBE BRYANT LEADS ALL PLAYERS AFTER 1st ROUND OF ALL-STAR BALLOTING
On December 16th, the NBA announced its FIRST returns of 2011 NBA All-Star balloting with Kobe Bryant (722,682) LEADING all players in All-Star voting, ahead of Orlando's Dwight Howard (611,561) and Miami's LeBron James (607,994). Pau Gasol (390,808), who made his third All-Star team last season as a reserve, ranks 2nd among forwards in the West behind Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant (470,881). Andrew Bynum (198,044) ranks 2nd among West centers behind Houston's Yao Ming (430,984), while New Orleans' Chris Paul (386,649) ranks 2nd among West guards behind Bryant. In the East, James and Boston's Kevin Garnett (456,111) lead the forward voting, Miami's Dwyane Wade (570,489) and Boston's Rajon Rondo (497,141) are the top two vote-getters at guard and Howard leads all East centers in balloting.

In each of the last three seasons, Bryant has led the Western Conference in all-star balloting. Last season, Bryant received 2,456,224 votes, finishing second overall to Cleveland's LeBron James (2,549,693). In 2008-09, he accumulated 2,805,397 votes, finishing third in overall balloting behind Dwight Howard (3,150,181) and James (2,940,823). In 2007-08, Bryant garnered 2,004,940 votes to finish fourth in overall voting behind Kevin Garnett (2,399,148), James (2,108,831) and Howard (2,066,991). In 2006-07, when he earned his second All-Star MVP, Bryant finished third overall in balloting behind James and Yao Ming. A three-time All-Star MVP (2002 Philadelphia, 2007 Las Vegas, 2009 Phoenix), Bryant is a 12-time All-Star and had started 11 consecutive All-Star games before missing last year's contest due to a sprained left ankle. Bryant, who was the youngest All-Star in NBA history in 1998, led all players in NBA All-Star balloting in 2003. Gasol has made three All-Star appearances (2006, 2009, 2010) and in 2009, became the 27th Laker in franchise history to be named to an All-Star team.

BRYANT NOW 3RD ON NBA FRANCHISE CAREER POINTS LIST
Last season, with his 29th point on February 1, 2010 at Memphis, Kobe Bryant surpassed Jerry West as the Lakers all-time leading scorer. In the history of the NBA, only two players have scored more points with a single franchise than Bryant (26,552): Karl Malone (1st/36,374) and Michael Jordan (2nd/29,277). This season, Bryant has moved past Hakeem Olajuwon (26,511) for 3rd on this list (12/19 at Toronto) and John Havlicek (26,395) for 4th (12/10 at Chicago).

BRYANT PASSES JOHN HAVLICEK FOR 11th ON NBA'S ALL-TIME SCORING LIST
With 23 points at Chicago (12/10/10), Kobe Bryant passed John Havlicek (26,395) for 11th on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Should he continue to score anywhere near his current pace (25.4 ppg), Bryant (26,552) would move to 6th on the all-time list by season's end. Next on the all-time list ahead of Bryant are Dominique Wilkins (10th/26,668), Oscar Robertson (9th/26,710), Hakeem Olajuwon (8th/26,946), Elvin Hayes (7th/27,313) and Moses Malone (6th/27,409).

Bryant has been steadily moving up the list over the past few years and last season alone, passed Alex English (25,613), Reggie Miller (25,279), Jerry West (25,192), Patrick Ewing (24,815) and Allen Iverson (24,368). In passing West with a slam dunk at the 4:14 mark of the third quarter February 1, 2010 at Memphis, finishing the game with 44 points (West's retired number), Bryant became the leading scorer in Lakers franchise history. In 2008-09, Bryant passed Hall-of-Famers Charles Barkley (23,757), Robert Parish (23,334), Adrian Dantley (23,177), Elgin Baylor (23,149), Clyde Drexler (22,195), Gary Payton (21,813) and Larry Bird (21,791).

WIRE-TO-WIRE
With their 109-94 victory in Indiana on December 15th, the Lakers recorded their FIFTH wire-to-wire win of the season. The Lakers other wire-to-wire victories came against the Warriors (10/31 vs. GS, 11/21 vs. GS), Grizzlies (11/2 vs. MEM) and Wizards (12/7 vs. WAS). Last year, the Lakers claimed NINE wire-to-wire victories (games in which they never trailed); seven during the regular season and two during the 2010 Playoffs (4/18 & 4/27 vs. Oklahoma City). During their previous championship run in 2008-09, the Lakers claimed 11 wire-to-wire victories; nine during the regular season and two during the 2009 Playoffs (4/29 vs. Utah & 5/17 vs. Houston). Last season, the Lakers also lost twice in wire-to-wire fashion (98-107 1/8/10 @ POR and 75-91 3/26/10 @ OKC).

NO REST, NO PROBLEM
In their second game of a back-to-back set with the Wizards and Pacers, Kobe Bryant scored 31 points in a 109-94 victory at Indiana. Bryant's average of 29.0 ppg in the second game of back-to-back sets is the highest in the NBA this season. The Lakers have played five sets of back-to-back sets on the year, with Bryant scoring 30 points 11/3 @ Sacramento, 33 points 11/17 @ Detroit, 27 points 12/1 @ Houston, 24 points 12/8 @ LA Clippers and 31 points 12/15 @ Indiana (all 2nd of back-to-back games).*

GAME WINNERS
Known for his clutch shooting, Derek Fisher delivered once again for the Lakers in their 87-86 victory over the Clippers on December 8th, this time in game-winning fashion with a running three-foot layup high off the glass as the buzzer sounded. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since the stat began being tracked prior to the 2000-01 season, Fisher now has five game winning field goals, four in the regular season and one in the playoffs (FGM in last 10 seconds of the 4th quarter or overtime). Only two, however, have actually come with the Lakers; the other being his famous 0.4 second buzzer beater 5/13/04 at San Antonio (74-73 win). Fisher's other game winners came with Utah (2/10/07 vs. NY (104-102 win) and Golden State (3/25/05 vs. MIL (118-117 win), 12/28/05 vs. BOS (111-109 win)).
Last season, teammate Kobe Bryant connected on six game-winners; the most game winning field goals of any player in a single season over the last 10 years (Carmelo Anthony ranks second on this list with five game-winning field goals in 2005-06). Since the start of the 2000-01 season, Bryant has 20 field goals that have given his team the lead within the last 10 seconds of a fourth quarter or overtime, the most in the league over that span.

EMPHATIC END TO LOSING STREAK
The Lakers ended their first 4-game losing streak since April of '07 with a 113-80 victory over Sacramento (12/3/10). It's the second-largest margin of victory to end a losing streak of at least four games the Lakers have ever had. The Lakers ended a four-game losing streak by beating the Hawks by 46 points on January 9, 2004 (113-67).*

IRON MAN
Entering the Lakers game at San Antonio, Derek Fisher has played in 443 consecutive regular season games dating back to April 15, 2005, the longest consecutive games streak among all active NBA players. Fisher moved into the top position after Portland's Andre Miller (632) missed the Blazers game against Phoenix (12/7/10) due to NBA suspension. Additionally, Fisher has started 321 consecutive regular season games dating back to January 15, 2007, tops among all active players by more than a season's worth of games (2nd Luis Scola). Former Laker A.C. Green holds the NBA record for most consecutive games played with 1,192 dating from 11/19/86 4/18/01 while a member of the Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat.

Lakers’ struggles continue in 97-82 loss to San Antonio

Spurs 97, Lakers 82 (final)

The Lakers were blown out for the third consecutive game, this time watching the San Antonio Spurs beat them by double digits.

L.A. trailed by as many as 19 points before losing by 15 -- a one-sided defeat that followed a 19-point loss to the Milwaukee Bucks last week and a 16-point drubbing by the Miami Heat on Christmas Day.

Kobe Bryant was angry at his teammates after the loss to the Heat. It'll be interesting to see where he directs his anger this time.

Maybe he'll point the finger at himself. Bryant scored 21 points, but was just eight for 27 from the field. He also had five turnovers and was given a technical foul.

At one point, Bryant missed 13 consecutive shots from early in the first quarter to the third quarter. He made two in a row in the fourth, but then missed his last four before taking a seat on the bench with just over two minutes left.

Tony Parker scored 23 points for the Spurs and DeJuan Blair had a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

The Lakers play at New Orleans on Wednesday night,

Spurs 71, Lakers 62 (end of third quarter)

This time, it was Derek Fisher who lost his composure and was hit with a technical foul late in the third quarter.

Fisher was upset after Richard Jefferson scored on a put-back over his back. Fisher grabbed the basketball and ran all the way up to midcourt to confront Jefferson, who now had his back turned to the play.

Kobe Bryant had already gotten a technical foul in the second quarter.

Bryant was having a horrible game. He missed his first four shots in the third, giving him a string of 13 straight misses dating back to the first quarter.

Bryant didn't make a shot in the third until hitting a three-pointer with 3:45 left.

The Lakers were a team in disarray, a team looking uncertain of what to do and who to turn to.

Andrew Bynum gave the Lakers a small lift, scoring twice in the third, and had 10 points on four-for-four shooting after three quarters.

Lakers 44, Spurs 42 (end of first half)

Kobe Bryant got into an exchange with San Antonio's George Hill with 4:49 left in the second quarter. Both players were given technical fouls.

It meant that Bryant has gotten at least one technical in each of the last three games.

Bryant was ejected from the Dec. 21 game against Milwaukee Bucks after getting two technical fouls, and he got another technical against the Miami Heat on Christmas Day.

Bryant had eight points in the first half, but all of them came in the game's opening three minutes. He missed 10 of his 14 shots and had four turnovers in the half.

The Lakers, down by nine points to start the second quarter, closed the gap primarily because of the play of their reserves Andrew Bynum, Steve Blake, Shannon Brown and Matt Barnes.

Bynum had four points and three rebounds in the first half.

Spurs 27, Lakers 18 (end of first quarter)

It was clear from the start that Kobe Bryant was going to be aggressive, that he was going to be on the attack.

Bryant took the Lakers' first four shots, and six of their first seven.

Bryant had been angry about his team's play ever since the loss on Christmas Day to the Miami Heat at Staples Center.

Still, Bryant was unable to carry the Lakers in the first quarter.

He was four for 10 from the field in the first, scoring eight points. He had three turnovers and he was called for an offensive foul.

The Lakers couldn't stop Tony Parker, who had 10 points.

Making matters worse for the Lakers was that Matt Bonner made a three-pointer just before the first-quarter buzzer sounded, giving the Spurs a nine-point lead entering the second quarter.

Pregame: Lakers aren't panicking

The city of Los Angeles is in a state of panic over the play of the Lakers, Coach Phil Jackson was told Tuesday night.

Jackson smiled, and replied: "That was on the radio? You got that?"

Jackson just nodded and said, "OK."

His team has lost consecutive games in embarrassing fashion and now has to take on the San Antonio Spurs at AT&T Center.

The Spurs have the best record in the NBA at 26-4.

"Well, we'll see how we do tonight," Jackson said. "It's one game at a time."

Jackson said the Spurs are playing a fast-paced tempo, which is different from past years when they pounded the ball down low to Tim Duncan.

"This is a game we're prepared for," Jackson said. "We're ready to play this game. We're healthy and coming along."

Lakers Gameday | 12/19/10 | Raptors

GAME NOTES

SEASON& SERIES NOTES; CONNECTIONS
The Lakers lead their season series with Toronto 1-0, after splitting last season's series with the Raptors 1-1. The two teams have split six season series while the Lakers have swept the other eight (2-0). This will be the 30th meeting between the two teams with the Lakers leading the all-time series 23-6. In the team's 20th meeting back on January 22, 2006, Kobe Bryant made NBA history, scoring 81 points including 55 points in the second half to bring the Lakers back from 18 down to defeat the Raptors 122-104 at STAPLES Center. Only Wilt Chamberlain in March of 1962 scored more points in a game (100) and points in a half (59) than Bryant. In addition, Bryant eclipsed Elgin Baylor's franchise record 71 points in a game and his own franchise record for points in a half (42) in what was ultimately the Lakers largest come-from-behind victory of the season. The 122 points scored by the Lakers in the contest were the most ever scored by Los Angeles against Toronto, eclipsing the old mark of 120 points established in the teams' first ever game back on December 8, 1995. Two seasons ago on February 1, 2008, the Lakers matched their largest margin of victory against Toronto with a 121-101 victory at Air Canada Centre. The Lakers are 8-2 in their last 10 overall games against the Raptors. The Lakers are 10-2 all-time against the Raptors at STAPLES Center and are winners of their last nine straight at home. When visiting Toronto, the Lakers are 10-4 all-time against the Raptors and 7-3 in their last 10 visits to Air Canada Centre. Under head coach Phil Jackson, the Lakers have gone 17-4 when facing Toronto. In 25 career games (21 starts) against Toronto, Kobe Bryant is averaging 28.2 points. Lakers center Pau Gasol and Raptors guard Jose Calderon have both played for Spain internationally as members of both the 2008 Olympic silver medal team and the gold medal winning Spanish 2006 FIBA World Championship team.

3-TIME ALL STAR GAME MVP KOBE BRYANT LEADS ALL PLAYERS AFTER 1st ROUND OF ALL-STAR BALLOTING

BRYANT NEARS 3RD ON NBA FRANCHISE CAREER POINTS LIST
With his 29th point February 1, 2010 at Memphis, Kobe Bryant surpassed Jerry West as the Lakers all-time leading scorer. In the history of the NBA, only three players have scored more points with a single franchise than Bryant (26,494). With nine points at Philadelphia on December 17th, Bryant is now 17 points shy of equaling Hakeem Olajuwon's total with the Rockets (26,511). Earlier this month on December 10th at Chicago, Bryant moved past John Havlicek (26,395) for 4th on this list. Should Bryant pass Olajuwon, he will trail only Karl Malone (1st/36,374) and Michael Jordan (2nd/29,277) for most points with a single franchise in league history.

WIRE-TO-WIRE
With their 109-94 victory in Indiana on December 15th, the Lakers recorded their FIFTH wire-to-wire win of the season. NO REST, NO PROBLEM
In their second game of a back-to-back set with the Wizards and Pacers, Kobe Bryant scored 31 points in a 109-94 victory at Indiana. Bryant's average of 29.0 points per game in the second of back-to-back games is the highest in the NBA this season. The Lakers have played five sets of back-to-back sets on the year, with Bryant scoring 30 points 11/3 @ Sacramento, 33 points 11/17 @ Detroit, 27 points 12/1 @ Houston, 24 points 12/8 @ LA Clippers and 31 points 12/15 @ Indiana (all second of back-to- back games).*

BRYANT PASSES JOHN HAVLICEK FOR 11th ON NBA'S ALL-TIME SCORING LIST
With 23 points at Chicago (12/10/10), Kobe Bryant (26,494) passed John Havlicek (26,395) for 11th on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Should he continue to score anywhere near his current pace (26.1 ppg), Bryant would move to 6th on the all-time list by season's end.

BACK-TO-BACK
This season, the Lakers are 4-1 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game of back-to-backs.

IRON MAN
Entering the Lakers game in Toronto, Derek Fisher has played in 440 consecutive regular season games dating back to April 15, 2005, the longest consecutive games streak among all active NBA players. Fisher moved into the top position after Portland's Andre Miller (632) missed the Blazers game against Phoenix (12/7/10) due to NBA suspension. Additionally, Fisher has started 318 consecutive regular season games dating back to January 15, 2007, tops among all active players by more than a season's worth of games (2nd Luis Scola). Former Laker A.C. Green holds the NBA record for most consecutive games played with 1,192 dating from 11/19/86 4/18/01 while a member of the Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat.

40-POINT GAMES
With 41 points November 28th versus Indiana, Kobe Bryant scored 40+ points for the 105th time (regular season) in his NBA career. Bryant last topped the 40-point mark in the regular season back on February 1, 2010 at Memphis when he scored 44 points while passing Jerry West to become the Lakers all-time leading scorer. Last season, Bryant eclipsed the 40-point mark eight times, with the Lakers going 7-1 in those games. In the history of the NBA, only two players have more career 40-point games: Wilt Chamberlain (271) and Michael Jordan (173). The Lakers are now 72-33 all-time in games that Bryant scores 40+ points. Bryant holds the Lakers franchise record for 40- point games in a single season, recording 27 during the 2005-06 campaign. Bryant also holds the franchise record for most consecutive 40-point games (9), established during the 2002-03 season. Only Wilt Chamberlain (14 twice, 10 once) has had longer consecutive 40-point game streaks in league history than Bryant.

GASOL'S PERFECT SHOOTING NIGHT
With 28 points, nine rebounds and five assists while shooting 10-for-10 from the field and 8-for-8 from the free throw line on 11/21 vs. Golden State, Pau Gasol became just the third player in the NBA's shot clock era to record a perfect shooting night from the field and the line with at least 25 points, five rebounds and five assists. The only other players to accomplish this rare feat are Gary Payton in January of 1995 (32 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists (14-14 FG, 3-3 FT)) and Charles Barkley in March of 1989 (31 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists (10-10 FG, 9-9 FT)). Additionally, Gasol became the fifth Laker in franchise history to convert at least 10 field goals without a miss in a single game and the first to do so since Byron Scott went 10-for-10 2/26/86 at Dallas. Wilt Chamberlain converted a franchise record 14-of-14 field goals without a miss 3/11/69 vs. Detroit with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (11-11 FG twice) and Mitch Kupchak (11-11 FG) rounding out the list.

PERFECT NIGHT FOR BARNES
In the Lakers 112-95 victory 11/19 at Minnesota, Matt Barnes came off the bench to score 24 points on a perfect night from the field and free-throw line (7-7 FG, 5-5 3FG, 5-5 FT). Since the NBA instituted the three-point shot prior to the 1979-80 season, only two other bench players have been perfect from the free-throw line and from three- point range with at least five attempts in each category in the same game. New Jersey's Bostjan Nachbar shot 6-for-6 from three-point range and 5-for-5 from the free- throw line on 4/15/07 and Craig Ehlo shot 5-for-5 from three-point range and 7-for-7 from the charity stripe for Atlanta on 1/30/96.*

BARNES JOINS BARKLEY FOR UNIQUE DISTINCTION
With 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists 11/19 at Minnesota on a perfect 7-of-7 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free throw line, Matt Barnes joined Charles Barkley as the only other player in NBA history to post a minimum 20-point, 5-rebound, 5-assist night while not missing a single shot, with a minimum of 5 field goal attempts AND 5 free throw attempts. Barkley posted 31 points, seven rebounds and six assists on a perfect 10-of-10 from the field and 9-of-9 from the free throw line in a 135-122 victory over the Spurs back on March 24, 1989 with the 76ers. Ironically, just one game later, Pau Gasol became the third player in NBA history to do so, posting 28 points, nine rebounds and five assists on 10-of-10 shooting from the field and 8-of-8 shooting from the foul line in the Lakers victory 11/21 vs. Golden State.*

Lakers Practice Report: 12/20/10

The Lakers returned from an 11-day trip through the Midwest and East Coast having won five of six games, about which coach Phil Jackson said he felt "OK," as that was what was expected. While Jackson was pleased with his second unit, he was generally less enamored with the starting five.

"The bench I thought played very well," Jackson summarized. "I wasn't happy with our starters. I thought they played some good defense at times; offensively, I didn't find them very stimulating or very exciting at all."

Back at the practice facility in El Segundo for the first time in nearly two weeks -- and with brand new practice jerseys and shorts, incidentally -- the Lakers recognized that they had only two games on the schedule in the next eight days. Tuesday's contest against Milwaukee and Saturday's X-mas showdown with Miami aside, that leaves several days of practice for the squad in advance of a road back-to-back against San Antonio and New Orleans on Dec. 28-29.

The focus will primarily be on the team's defense, despite what Jackson thought about the starter's offense.

"We have some strides to make defensively if we're going to be a good team," said Jackson, adding that he'd like to put in some work on the team's zone offense as well (Toronto dipped into a 2-3 zone at times on Sunday).

Despite not playing their best basketball for full games -- the fourth quarter against Philadelphia and first half against Indiana were excellent -- the fact remains that the Lakers have won five consecutive games on the road, including a 4-0 mark since Andrew Bynum returned to the fold. With the 7-foot center solidifying the rotation, not to mention the paint, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom have looked fresh, and a bench group composed of Steve Blake, Shannon Brown, Matt Barnes, Lamar Odom/Luke Walton and either Bynum or Gasol has overwhelmed opponents.

The bench dominance was most evident in Toronto, when the bench combined for 57 points, including double-figure performances from Bynum (16), Brown (14) and Barnes (12).

Of course, having the three-headed big man monster of Gasol-Odom-Bynum has been entirely critical to L.A.'s having won back-to-back championships; it's a group that promises to only get better, since Bynum still has a ways to go until he's playing up to his capabilities.

"(Bynum) came out and practiced fully today," said Jackson. "He got a little stiff, we took him out for a second, and he's still tiring. But that will happen as he gets in game condition.

Bynum, who told reporters that he was sore after the win against Toronto, told me that he felt "fine" when the team landed back in L.A.; he iced down on the plane, and understands that there's going to be some soreness in his knee as he continues to get stronger. The 23-year-old center did, after all, manage to put up thost 16 points with seven rebounds in 17 minutes despite not really being able to jump as he'd like to.

"I have to do a lot more training, I think, just to get some of my explosion back," he said. "Normally I'll catch lobs (and dunk) and my game is off the floor, but right now I feel like I'm kind of glued to the floor. That's only going to come with more minutes and getting more explosion training in."

Having a few extra days of practice surrounding the two games in eight days looks like a pretty good recipe for Bynum's improvement.

Abdul-Jabbar owns Bucks franchise records for points (14,211), rebounds (7.161) and scoring average (30.4) among others. Prior to joining the Chicago Bulls and then the Lakers, assistant coach Frank Hamblen spent nine seasons with the Bucks as both Del Harris and Mike Dunleavy's top assistant while serving as the interim head coach for Milwaukee during the 1991-92 season.

In the history of the NBA, only two players have scored more points with a single franchise than Bryant (26,514): Karl Malone (1st/36,374) and Michael Jordan (2nd/29,277). This season, Bryant has moved past Hakeem Olajuwon (26,511) for 3rd on this list (12/19 at Toronto) and John Havlicek (26,395) for 4th (12/10 at Chicago).

BRYANT PASSES JOHN HAVLICEK FOR 11th ON NBA'S ALL-TIME SCORING LIST
With 23 points at Chicago (12/10/10), Kobe Bryant passed John Havlicek (26,395) for 11th on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Should he continue to score anywhere near his current pace (25.9 ppg), Bryant (26,514) would move to 6th on the all-time list by season's end.

BACK-TO-BACK

This season, the Lakers are 4-1 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game of back-to-backs.

IRON MAN
Entering the Lakers game vs. Milwaukee, Derek Fisher has played in 441 consecutive regular season games dating back to April 15, 2005, the longest consecutive games streak among all active NBA players. Fisher moved into the top position after Portland's Andre Miller (632) missed the Blazers game against Phoenix (12/7/10) due to NBA suspension. Additionally, Fisher has started 319 consecutive regular season games dating back to January 15, 2007, tops among all active players by more than a season's worth of games (2nd Luis Scola). Former Laker A.C. Green holds the NBA record for most consecutive games played with 1,192 dating from 11/19/86 4/18/01 while a member of the Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat.
